Hand-Pressed Custom Military Spec Dog Tags (from $55.00)

from $55.00

Each tag is individually machine-pressed by Philippe by hand in Kingston on a restored 1960s Perma Model IV impact press — a precision-built mechanical press designed for deep, tactile marking. Unlike modern laser engraving, this antique machine leaves a genuine impression you can feel — each character is impact-marked, creating subtle variations in depth and texture depending on the pressure — every tag is one of a kind.

Offered in three heritage metals — brass, stainless steel, and aluminum — each dog tag have rolled edges and comes paired with a military-spec #3, 2.4 mm ball bead chain in brass or stainless steel. All chains are cut to the standard 26″ military length, unless otherwise specified.

The design follows authentic U.S. military specifications, complete with rolled edges and genuine deadstock materials sourced from mid-century suppliers. Upgrade options include authentic 1960s Vietnam-era dog tags and original chains, along with other specialty deadstock metals.

ABOUT- A Craft Rooted in History
Philippe can almost always be found wearing dog tags. His inspiration for them traces back to the Vietnam War era — a time when official military identification tags were standard issue, yet street vendors across Vietnam began crafting custom versions for American soldiers. These personalized tags became small tokens of individuality, stamped with local translations, humor, or simple requests for the comforts they missed most — like whiskey or a good time.

His pieces pay homage to that era, when a single piece of metal carried both identity and expression. Each tag he creates preserves the tactile history of the time: the cool weight of stainless steel, the familiar 2.4 mm ball chains, the imperfect lettering, and the raw individuality of hand-pressed metal — a craft that bridges wartime utility and human emotion.
